Just a quick overview first Stan to see if you want to go any further.

1. This not a cheap project.. I did my bike in 2010 and the only dealer back then was Spiegler Performance Parts - Dayton Ohio. All up it was nearly $2000.
2. These "gadgets" are to do a custom wiring job on your bike. Do you like electrical stuff ?
3. There are many re-sellers today as you mentioned. I bought the M- Unit Blue a couple of months ago from Revzilla.
4. I re-wired the whole bike. If you are essentially doing a stock restoration , I'm not sure how these components would blend in - old and new.
Having said that, the M-Unit is an electronic circuit breaker. The bike has no fuses. The M-Unit does all the electrical switching - I use their push buttons on the handle bars to initiate the electrical impulse that triggers the M-Unit to switch on or off whatever circuit you choose
5. The original fuse box on the bike was not adequate for all the extra "stuff " I wanted to run / have . Heated clothing , gps, phone charger a two large LED aux headlights.
6. There is no wiring diagram. I started from scratch. But the instruction sheet is very helpful.
7. It is not difficult to do as much or little as you like.
8. If you wanted to start with the M-Unit and walk thru it with photos, I can do that. The M-Unit blue is not on the bike yet. The on/off is triggered by a cell phone - I have an I-phone and only the android app is available at the moment.

8. Except for the headlight, tail light and starter solenoid , I have replaced every part with LED - turn signals, dash board , speedometer.

By shear coincidence I watched a You Tube video this morning about the M- Unit Blue. Brilliant use and adaptation of modern electronics.

There are no coincidences scotch! ;)

Tacklehappy - thank you for taking the time to do this write up!
Yes, I found they sell this M-Unit Blue for $359. So the current price is way down from the original unit back then. I have a way to go before I get to putting together the electrical system, but it's something to consider while the bike is still in it's basket case stage. I'd imagine the total cost of DIY installing and rewiring the bike would be significantly lower comparing to 2010.

Re your #4: I don't have any major external electrical fixtures for my bike. Missing are: whole headlight assembly, all 4 turn signals, the whole rear light. I do have regulators etc. but I have absolutely no idea at this point if any of them will properly work. Many electrical connectors should be replaced, many cleaned, and I have no idea if the wires are fine.
I considered rewiring the bike with all new connectors.

I need to buy all lights and aftermarket are without a doubt much cheaper than OEM. Not mentioning availability. I would be saving lots of money getting suitable aftermarket parts.
Considering this, and having to replace connectors and trace the wires, it crossed my mind using this M-Unit.

True, the unit itself and the switch add up. But that would be balanced with the cheaper cost of the hardware.
I would try to use OEM electronic parts which I have if they function, but certain items like regulator or turn light relay, I'd swich to something new.

I also still have to check and decide if the coils are OK. I am considering an upgrade as many users suggest.
Did you completely replace the speedometer to something modern? I'd like to keep it but replacing the bulbs to LED in it - why not.

From what I heard the 1982 models have upgraded charging system, I am sure it can handle a cellphone charging. I will not have any heaters or auxiliary lights, that's for sure.

I have Android phone, but of course remote start would be an option as I understand. Still need the ignition switch, right?

I am not big on electrical stuff, but with hands on guidance I could handle a project like this.

It would be great if you could do such a walk through with photos. I am sure lots of people would greatly appreciate this. I haven't disided yet about the purchase, as I know too little about it, but I am seriously considering it. A walk through might help me convincing myself. Also, it has to be similar to other bikes, and I am considering it for my other bike as well.

I think that installing one of these M-Units would be a perfect project for Scotch. There's no doubt he would enjoy the challenge, and give a great write-up on the procedure. Then, if several of us wanted to do the same, we might arrange a discount off the unit! With that in mind, I'll chip in towards the cost of your purchase, Scotch.

Stan,re paints: saw you said you were considering maybe going with a gloss finish ?
A year ago I re-painted my Vmax engine: the Vmax forum guru's recommended using a paint called Simoniz Engine Enamel - gloss black: meant to be near as dammit same as Yamaha original finish.
Sorry its not a great picture - but the only one I took.

Well, to my surprise they were not lying: the finish looked like poured glass and is heat resistent.
I rattle canned onto a clean but not perfect surface and was well impressed with the results - can recommend if you are looking for a one coat high shine gloss finish.
Cheers Tim

OK, then. You guys sort out the details and decide who'll collect the money and purchase the unit - then just send it to me !
I'll do a hell-of-a-good job on a write up. but.......I keep it !
