Re: 1982 KZ1300 rescue and rebuild
6 years 8 months agoIt likely goes against some conventional wisdom but I apply "the thinnest film" of light clean oil to the side of a new gasket that I want to release.
I do too. Applying oil to new gaskets I think is universally recommended. I just think I did something 'unconventional' with that one gasket probably not applying it, as far as I can remember, then being too conservative on the liquid gasket. Or perhaps no need to liquid gasket there? I think the manual suggests adding some (?)
Either way, something to do and get it over with

A write up about what to apply and what not. Just to read (general, not KZ related):

I have asked about it before so I owe and explanation how I have done it.
The original hose is dirty but overall fine except for one small split on the end. I just used a brand new 1/4" fuel line, which externally is very close in diameter to the original.
I will decide if I run it above or below the main frame after installing the coils - I just want to make things neat.
It's not permanently attached yet. I will use plastic ties for it. But that when installing the air boxes.

Instead of oil I always put a thin layer of grease on any gaskets I was putting on (both sides) trick taught me by an old mechanic friend he said by doing so the gaskets would seal better and over time they wouldn't stick to the applied surface and if it had to come apart it would be a lot easier and I found it to be true at least it worked for me.

IN the first picture above in my post the hose clamp goes 180 degrees the other way - otherwise the frame will be in the way to push the reserve tank in.
