Today I went to the shop where I left the crankshaft to have them make a tool to remove the starter clutch.

The owner is a good friend of mine, we have known each other since childhood and often go out to dinner with our partners.

Well, the first rule you should know when you ask a friend for a favor is not to tell him that THE JOB DOES NOT HURRY.

My soul mate has done absolutely nothing, the crankshaft is still in the cardboard box I brought with me and in the same place in the workshop where I put it.

To celebrate our wedding anniversary tomorrow I leave on a trip with my wife for 10 days touring the beautiful island of Sardinia with the BMW Cruiser Club, I will be disconnected from the forum for a few days, we will read each other on my return, greetings to all.

I asked my upholsterer friend to make seat covers for my B2 seats in leather - I had to keep nagging him and it took over a year.

I then asked him to make a leather seat cover for my A2 seat and that took over a year too - and he lost the buckles for the strap!

Seats are really nice though :-)

Persecuted by bad luck.

After waiting more than a month to have my crankshaft disassembled today was the day chosen to pick it up from the workshop.

In the morning I received a wassap from my friend, owner of the workshop, that he had given the order to disassemble the part and that after lunchtime it would be ready for me. With a mixture of nervousness and enthusiasm I showed up at the workshop early in the afternoon.

The guy who has the function of workshop manager saw me come in and long before I approached he already shouted at me, “there has been a problem with a part.”
As I approached the finished work table he showed me the rotor, "look, it didn't hold the pressure of the hydraulic press and one of the magnets broke"

 Damn my luck....

I made clear the instructions on how to disassemble the rotor, I also left them the workshop book so they could see the disassembly process.

But to no avail, apparently the wisest operator of the workshop chose to put the crankshaft directly into the hydraulic press, I guess to finish earlier, it's Friday and we want to make the most of the weekend.

After a bunch of excuses I explained to him that there is a thread in the rotor to insert an extractor screw, he had explained it to his boss, my friend, and it seemed that they knew what they were doing although the final result shows the opposite.

After loading the parts in my van, my friend arrives, he knew nothing of the event, while I explain what happened, the smile disappears from his face, he knows about his employee's mistake.

I wish him a good weekend and leave them discussing. This is the result of a job poorly done without paying due attention.

I know it, the operator who screwed up knows it and so does my friend, the owner of the shop.

I ask for help to know if gluing the broken piece of the magnet the rotor will do its function.

If so, what kind of adhesive should I use?

In the meantime I am looking for a second hand rotor, apparently in Europe there are none left that are advertised for sale, in the USA I have found a couple of them that with shipping and fees cost me more than $225.

I wouldn't waste my time trying to "glue" it back together.  Firstly:  The flux-lines at the end of each magnet are now disrupted and this will have a negative affect on the charging output.  Maybe minimal but.......
Of greater concern: Will the "fucked-up multiple fields" reek havoc on the V/Reg ?   And for shits-n-giggles I'll toss in:  Having any of those pieces come loose (at any RPM) would be catastrophic for the stator, probably the cover/housing and.....now you've got little magnetic bits sticking to anything that they come close to !

I gue$$ you'll find out how good of a friend, your friend i$.
