Got this in the mail today. Another piece closer to completing the puzzle!
I have a question. The two widest positioned holes fit perfectly the mounting holes in the air box. The other smaller holes don't connect to anything underneath the tray.
They are factory made, and those in to the right have even space for what looks like for washers of something with a flange (on the underside). Definitely, they are there for a purpose and Kawasaki made. What are they for, what model were they mounted on?

i think you're going to find that only the two (widest) holes were the only original. A P.O. has drilled the others for ?????

I did some research, and I've seen photos online (google) trays with exactly the same extra holes positioned exactly the same and the same concave spaces for washers or something similar on the underside. One photo was even in Japan! So, I am very confident these are original.
On the side note, I cleaned up those little threaded holes for the screws mounting the Kawasaki emblems with a tap. It's a 3 mm x0.50. Very happy

A while back I jumped on this engine guards on eBay. Rusty with some scratches but otherwise functional.
Today they got a 'clean up' and are ready for whatever comes next. Painting, powder coat, or what I'd like best - chrome plated, which would fit the bike best. I just have to check if the price can fit as well! haha
Welded and beautified

Used to have a set of those until I ground the bottoms off both sides ! These in my opinion are the better looking ones you can have. AMMCO made them back in the day if I remember correctly.

Scotch. I went back to your tray photos and I see it also has those holes in the exact spots where mine. And you taped them with electrical tape!
So, I have no doubt that these wholes are original and come with the tray. A pair of those you have seem to have some sort of, perhaps, rubber domes sticking through them?
So, maybe the tray is clipped onto something?
The mystery seems not to be solved yet....
