1982 KZ1300 rescue and rebuild

The bike made it home. The frame is stripped and waiting for me to sand blast it and take it for powder coating. The triple tree is off since this photo as well.



The engine looks quite clean from underside. Now the removing of all old gaskets and cleaning the surface before some painting.

It's good to see an update from you Stan.
I'm glad you've decided to powder coat the frame. it will be a tougher finish than paint, and you can polish it up to a good gloss.
The engine sure does look very clean internally.
Will be interested to hear how much of a battle you had with the swing arm pivots.

I started with spraying Kroil on both sides of the frame where the swing arm is attached. Occasionally tapping the frame and the pivots I left it sit for probably a month. The day of the removal I heated the area well with hair dryer. Then used washers and a bolt to apply pressure and left it like this for a few days tapping and heating the area again once in a while.





The pivot moved a bit and I hammered it back using a piece of aluminum to push it back in. This distributed the oil and loosen the pivot further.
Tightening the bolt the pivot moved finally all the way to the edge of the frame. Next a bar and a combination of a bar and a handle of a steel brush for bigger leverage. The pivot popped popped out quite easily at this moment.

The other side was harder at the beginning. The swing arm was loose and there was more space to play. It was safe at this stage to hammer the pivot inside the frame. Once I saw it coming out towards the center of the bike, I applied more Kroil, applied pressure from the bolt/washer and tapped it from the inside using a long steel rod I purchased from Home Depot. The pivot came out after a couple back and forth and slid out easily.

Next - a system of pulleys to lift the engine.

Next a couple of 2x4's under the engine. I lowered the engine and wiggled it out so it would clear the frame.
The last thing involved a bit of muscle power but straight forward - I just picked it up by hand and moved to the floor.
