Ah.....one or the other Stan. Not both ! The suggestion was specific to one side - allowing the gasket to stick to one surface and release the part from the other. And in the case of "a" thermostat-housing which is rarely removed/serviced, a dry gasket is fine. At least you "trued" the housing surface. I was specific about a "thin film" being applied. This was in reference to the use of "silicone-grease" or light oil - on the side of preference. By your pictures you clearly used too much RTV sealer which I have never recommended (for this exact reason).
I bet you over-fill your Waffle-Maker, too !:woohoo:

for the thermostat cover maybe try perma tex gasket sealer its like a brownish goop that comes in a tube (like a tooth paste tube) goes on like grease and silicone however is designed for sealing gaskets. wear nitrite gloves when you apply it it's messy and can be hard to get of your hands.

We used Permatex in the nuke plant for EVERYTHING. and on rare occasions depending on chemistry running through the system, the other choice was Hylomar.

By design, gaskets are made from a material which should absorb some of the liquid flowing through a system causing the gasket to swell, whiich seals the joint. The only purpose in using the gasket sealers is to help fill in minor imperfections in the faces of the joint.

Could anyone tell me what are these two holes on the left for? They seem to have no purpose..
And that bolt where I pointed the arrow - what is it holding? A bracket for something?

These should help, Stan. The two holes(?) don't do anything. They're probably there for production purposes to allow the rubber "coating" to be injected evenly to both sides of the hold-down bracket.(?) The Short screw is a hold-down for the top portion of triangular face plate of the Primary switch. The long screw threads into the frame-boss and "floats" in the hold down plate. Hope the rest is self explanatory.
