Globemaster:

When I place the tank as you suggest, with the tank far to the rear of the bike and the cups and bolt hole lined up, all is well. As soon as I start moving the tank forward, it hits the frame and begins to rise in the back. Also, the U shaped channels are loose, from left to right, when they are on the rubber caps. You describe the exact method for putting on a gas tank, which I have done many times. What is preventing this simple task from taking place is beyond me, at this time.

Charlie9670:

One of the photographs in the previous submissions shows where the grey from the back of the tank is rubbing the middle bar of the frame near the rear mount raising the tank so the tank and frame mounts are misaligned. We aren't sure if that is the problem area, but it goes along with what you suggested to help find the problem.

We spent over an hour last night trying to complete this job. Very frustrating.

Mightyzod,

Sorry I can't be of more help. You certainly have my sympathy. This is a very unique problem.

Certainly is a strange one, either the frame has been bent or altered which seems unlikely ,or the tank has altered, is it possible the tank tunnel has been narrowed by extreme heat/pressure ,a jack inside would open it up a bit but only thinking of a last resort!

I've had this happen when the connector for the fuel level sender gets stuck between the tank and the frame. Just a thought.

I think you need to hold it to the side as the tank goes on and then connect it up under the frame rails - a little bit fiddly without assistance.

has the tank been pressurised and bloated underneath somewhere causing it to sit up on the frame
