Hello everybody. I am new here. was created by Franconia
Great Website you have here.
I have just got a junk 10/79 KZ1300 in my shop and the customer is not interested to fix it. So. I am thinking of restoring it to a nice ride able condition for myself.
I am sure I could use some tips from guys to accomplish it.
I own a motorcycle shop for a long time and have every tool available.
I have a couple of questions and hope somebody has the answers.
- I want to change the oil pan to the 6.5l one but would like to keep the 6 into 2 exhaust. Can I do that?
- Is the lower cam chain sprocket ( Nylon?)still available.
BTW. I have completely restored a ZN1300 and couple Honda CBX1000's before. I love does 6 Cylinder Monsters. Own a one of a kind customized by me Honda Goldwing at the moment.
All your help is very appreciated and if you have any questions about bikes don't hesitate to ask.
Thanks,
Detlef

Welcome to the site Detlef. Lots of good help here. Some of the questions you might have may have already answered in the FAQ section of the site. I always like to poke around in there first. There's a wealth of historical knowledge in there.
Not sure about your question on the change out of the oil pan and whether you can keep the 6-2 exhaust. I'm sure someone has done it ( the oil pan change out is one of the more welcomed changes) IF you can get your hands on one. Can't remember if they stayed with the stock exhaust.
The nylon tensioner sprocket was available from Kawassaaki Japan a couple of years ago. I checked at my Kawasaki dealer here in Ontario Canada for the item and the dealer said it wasn't in the Canadian warehouse so he checked with Kawasaki Japan and found them. He ordered 2 for me and I had them in about 3 weeks.
The other option is the aftermarket replacement gear made by Liska. www.liskas.com/kz1300-cam-chain-idler/ It is metal, and a few members have installed them. The discussions that followed indicated that they whine for the first couple of huundred miles and then become quiet. That concerns me suggesting that something is wearing in to the other. My other thought here is that the later gears available from kawasaki may be more tough than the original and will last longer. Once I get this beast of mine up and running, I'll be monitoring the new nylon gear for wear.
Hope this helps with your questions.

Hi Franconia,
welcome to the group.
The bigger sump does fit with the original Kawasaki 6 into 2 exhaust system. You do need to get the longer oil pick-up tube to go with it or will need to get yours extended.
Regards
David

Thanks for all your replies. I really appreciate it.
What should I replace/upgrade or re-build on this Bike before I put it on the road? Any info would be helpful.
How reliable are the Z1300?
Thanks
