Isn't that what you have, Todd? An '81? That's what my parts bike is. I would like to sell it. It was lightly wrecked, got the forks a little and the case cover on the ignition side. Also the touring goodies didn't fare too well!

Greetings from the UK.

If your 81 1300 is an A3 model, then it is the rarest model & has a CDI & ignition system that is different to any other model.

That does not make the CDI any better or worse & it is very unlikely you will have issues unless you fit the wrong coils or have an electrical problem.

I think TODDH has a contact or company in the USA that maybe able to help you if it does go bad, but hopefully you wont need to.

You're not completely out of luck if it goes out as there's Ebay options (If your pockets are deep) and DIY options.

I've got links that I posted before for HEI ingition modules to replace a bad ingnitor. I have a set on my bike that were fitted from the prior owner. I would remove it if I could find a decently priced ignitor to replace it with :(. In the meantime it works I just dont like all the exposed wiring.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationCurrently I see three options for an 81.

The one listed on eBay, that Mike mentions.

There is an 81 specific youtube article on the A-3

Then www.carmousa.com. A Netherlands based company that I have used in the past. I have used these guys in the past with good results. Their EU address is www.carmo.nl

Don't forget guys the Kaw shop manual covers some extensive meter tests on how to diagnose the CDI. You'll need the supplement portion for the year model you have.

HotRodSixxer, I have an 82 model. (A-4)

Regards.

T.

Below is a good tutorial on testing CDI' for a UJM (Universal Japanese Motorcycle)
