Hi and help please i have now been trying to get my bike going since January hard to fit into a busy schedule but keep trying i have DC1 3.0 ohm dyna coils copper leads and ngk suppressors on my 81 with the very rare igniters the standard igniter lost some transistors when we first tried to fire this up i have since bought a new igniter from the guy in Finland and the same transistors have failed i am now pulling my hair out trying to find out what can be causing this i have had a answer from Dynatek themselves saying that there is no way the coils could be doing this any advice from anyone as i have been told the coils maybe drawing to many amps or does anyone know of anything else which could cause this any help greatly apprieciated thanks

Did you check the coils with the multimeter yourself to see if they are 3 ohms.

Yes the resistance is fine

The Dyna coils measured identical resistance to the factory coil and resistor block on my 81. They are a good match for that system.

Some things to check:

1) You must remove the balancing resistor when you install 3 ohm coils.

2) Check the primary (the 12 volt leads) on your coils they should be about 2.7 Ohms if it much more or less you have a bad coil

3) You may have an electrical short in your wiring

4) your voltage regulator must be in working order, if your voltage is high when the engine is running that will be a problem

5) the could have a bad Hall Effect sensor in the pick-up but I doubt that would cause a power transistor failure

6) I would recommend running suppression plug wires on bikes with electronic ignition modules (though many do not without an issue)

I presume the coils are new but still check for a connection to the steel core of the coil from any of the terminals. It is possible to have a fault in a new coil and measuring the resistance of either primary or secondary coils will not show a short to the core and the core will be earthed so you would effectively have a short to earth and not be seeing it. Also check that there is no connection from primary to secondary.
Over the years I have seen several new coils that are cactus.

Often though a multimeter wont finds a short and coil will leak secondary voltage. Usually this is a problem when the insulation breaks down in older coils. Still you should check for a short as Rick points out.

Its most likley something simple.

How and where did to instal the new coils? How did you connect the ground to the coils after you removed the resistor?
