Got the head back from machine shop today - JTR Engines in Poole. Very pleased with their work

I had the head pressure checked for leaks/cracks between water jackets and the chambers. I also got the head vacuum checked to test the valves were sealing in their seats.

All good to go back on now.

Did the machine shop deck the cylinder head?

If so, how much did they take off?

forgot to mention that. Yes, this time 4.5 thou was removed.

I did have it done a few years back but I can't find info on how much was removed.

Do I need to use a special "running in" oil when I put this back together?

I've been watching "Fast 'n' Loud" and they managed to destroy cams in a newly built engine because they didn't use the correct running in oil.

My crank and cams are already run in. The only new components will be the rings pistons and wrist pins.

I always just use the same oil I would normally use after a rebuild/refurbishment.

No need to use any special type of oil for running in.

Its worth changing it between 500 & 1000 miles though just to be safe & get rid of any small metal particles floating around.

If you dont have a magnetic sump plug, them its well worth having one as it traps the small metal parts (if any there) & lets you see them when you drop the oil. Our bikes sump plug is the same size as a Subaru Impretza (much cheaper to buy !).

cheers Pete,

I normally use Halfrauds 10W/40 motorcycle oil as it's been recommended by several people

I also fitted a Subaru magnetic sump plug (your recommendation if I remember correctly)
