I used an egg ring, the thing you fry eggs in to keep them round, cut at an angle and a large hose clamp to compress the rings, but I had the whole engine pulled down at the time and put the pistons in and then connected the rods to the crank later before putting the bottom case on, things we use when we get thinking, did the job well as the egg ring is aluminium and didn't hurt the rings, I hate to admit I used it, but it worked

Barrels are off again ready to be bored out.

The liner thickness is 2.3mm at the bottom end.

As the new pistons are 2mm larger than standard I guess this means that about 1mm of the liner has to be removed leaving a liner thickness of 1.3mm.

I think I mentioned earlier that I thought the Cruzinimage pistons felt a little light. Well the original 62mm pistons are 160g and the new 64mm pistons are 156g - so maybe just a shade lighter.

I've no idea what grade of aluminium the new pistons are made of but I've put some comparison photos in my photobucket folder here:

David,

Thank you for your time & dedication to this topic.

I really considered this big bore kit for my own bike before the rebuild (as its so cheap) but found the bores so good on my own bike after the strip that I did not feel it worth the added expense so just replaced the rings.

Your pics of the new pistons look really good in my opinion.

I have no reason to doubt this will work perfectly well for you & would be grateful if you will keep us updated how it goes.

block and new pistons are at the machine shop now. Should have it back in a week.

I'm going to need a new impeller and it looks like I'm going to have to get a very expensive CNC machined one from Germany :(

Mine has rounded off in the key-way - just like my last one did! I'm hoping I'll be able to get the ceramic part of the mechanical seal out of mine without breaking it as it was brand new.

David:

Have you been able to research or tell of 1.3mm will be enough sleeve? Seems a bit thin?

ill run this idea by you all and see what you think, i know a man that has done this on a Z1000.
Have new con rods made 10mm longer, have new pistons made with the wrist pin 10mm higher, just below the oil ring.
this would give you an extra 10mm of swept bore without over sizing the sleeve, and less force on the liner increasing the revlimit at the same time.
loads of engineering work for the enthusiast.
