Hello Bill,
I can get it to run at 2,500 rpm on the throttle or using the throttle stop screw ( the main one under the carbs) if I use the main throttle stop then it takes an age for the revs to come down should I rev it.

Say Andy:

If it "Takes an Age" for the revs to come down, this suggests a couple of potential problems or both.

1: Its possible you have a vacuum leak, check the intake boots, Air injection system, vacuum nipples on the in take on the head.

2: Your balance adjusters (place where you synchronize the carbs) may be way out of adjustment. Shouldn't be more than 4 turns out, if memory serves me correctly.

3: read the manual on setting the base idle screw. All settings are based on where you have that throttle and fast idle set at.

Let us know.

I'm with Todd! Sounds like a vacuum leak.
