Well it feels like I have been working on this bike for years but I will never give in.
1979 model.
I still have an idle issue but I feel thst I am nearly there now.
I have re built the carbs with new re build kits and the bike starts very easy, how ever after the bike has warmed up I switch it off and it will not start again until it has cooled down, I removed the plugs and found that they were black.
The main needle jets are on the bottom slot (No 5) but I will move them to No 3 as I think that is the correct position.
The previous owner had removed the fuel solenoid valve so that the petrol is now controlled by the floats.
Can someone please confirm that what I am doing is correct,

Thanks

Andy

Hello Andy,

Yes, place the clip on the third slot and work from there. Make sure that your float levels are correct. Fuel should settle between 6.5 and 8mm from the bowl gasket line. Plugs should burn a greyish brown. Get hold of a Gunson colour tuning tool and use this to get your idle air mixtures right. Removal of the solenoid valve is a good thing, but make sure you close the fuel tap a couple hundred meters before you stop. These bikes are prone to flooding and leaking fuel into the pots and down into your sump when parked with the old original fuel taps/petcocks. Spend a bit of money and get yourself a pingel petcock. There is a thread on this forum that has the part numbers for the pingel petcock and adaptor plate.

Good luck!

I agree with Craig about the float levels. What I've learned is that the black foam floats will get heavier if exposed to alcoholic fuel. (I KNOW that they get heavier, I SPECULATE that the problem is caused by the alcohol in the fuel.)
I was fighting sooty plugs till I set the fuel level by the wet method.

Good Luck!

Please excuse my ignorance but what is the wet method?

I believe the manual says 5.5 to 8.5 MM below the gasket.

Use the smallest diameter clear tubing you can find. If you see an air bubble in the tube up by the carb bowl the reading will not be accurate.

OK got that. Any idea where I get the adaptor for the bottom of the carb bowel, how do you know that both floats in each individual carb are shutting off at the same time
