Are you using a filter designed for a car i.e. the whitish opaque ones about 60mm long and 35 in dia. Don't ask how I know but I have a lot less hair nowdays. They will not flow enough fuel without the pressure of a pump.

I think it is but would that cause the petcock to restrict fuel flow when the bike warms up? Thanks

I'm with RickG. I had the same problem using a car filter. It was bigger so i figured it's better. But it did not flow enough fuel to keep up. Had nothing to do with heat. Swapped it out with a bike filter and no more problems.

It would not restrict the tap but it's still a good thing to get rid of. I had them on an R80GS/PD and one filter would not even keep one carb on one cylinder of a twin fed with fuel.

Even when I disconnect the gas line at the top of the filter gas will not flow until the engine cools off.
