I'm thinking I could seal any small splits in the rubber boots with some special black silicone, have some left from work on the Goldwing that was recommended by the owners club.

Se if you can get your hands on a tube of Loctite Black Max. It's specifically designed for manufacturing O-rings from bulk o-ring material. I used to have to make O-rings at work and that was the glue used to make the joint. Very similar to Crazy Glue only a pliable version.
