kza13 wrote: Went out and got some rosin core solder and did the reg wire connections, bike now running on 6 cylinders, all exhausts hot and even, revs well and no backfires, weird huh ??, had to be one of those yellow wires, still no smarter about that spare brown wire with the green tape around it, according to the wiring diagram the brown goes to lots of connectors, but most are not single connectors like the spare brown, maybe an "optional extra" ?? :-), i'll leave it alone till I get some info on how to use a multimeter and then do some tracing, so alls well that ends well although I haven't been for a ride yet she idles well, 6 cylinders firing sounds better that 4 or 5 then 6 sometimes, i'll post about how she goes when I take it to work tomorrow morning, cheers

Lets hope this was a cure and not coincidence. Something doesn't sound right when a repair on the charging side fixes a misfire situation. If nothing else, I'd be leary taking it to work before riding it for a week to "test" it for reliability.

<"something doesn't sound right when a repair on the charging side fixes a misfire situation">

Can't disagree with that. The disadvantage of doing multiple corrections - "Which one cured the problem"? In this case there was little choice with many concerns and issues so, as KB suggests, do some short test rides, starts and restarts (hot and cold) and have some confidence along with a crossed set of fingers that all is now well.

I have a feeling you're "Good to go" !

Thanks KB for picking-up on the "Solder" concern. I presumed with my comment about using corrosive cleaners on the terminals that this would be an obvious point but in hind-sight it was an important omission. "Never assume anything" !

Regardless - Well done kza13 !

Hope Pete got to work today but then it's only a short swim across the river to get home or a 10 mile walk

Nope ... took ute to work, got home, decided to take bike for a very short run, forget about all I've said, although I think it's fuel related this time, idles good but it's like it's running out of fuel when I give it a gut full, back to the drawing board, BUT all exhaust pipes are hot, so at least she is running on 6, will check carbs for amount of fuel in them and change the fuel filter and a section of fuel line on weekend, and triple check on shorts under tank, oh well the joys of a 6 and an idiot for a mechanic :-) :-)

after tuesday even the calendar goes WTF

I truly enjoy seeing those who persevere through tumultuous issues and come out the other end while a smile on their face. I've always demonstrated this to my kids and probably because of that I have a 37 year old daughter who is a Vice President in an insurance company and a 29 year old son headed down to Cheyenne Wyoming to manage an oil well services division. Both these kids know that there's nothing they can't do if they put their minds to it.
Kudos to you Pete for sticking it out. Just think of what you've gained in experience working through this issue. The old girl is 35 years old and God knows what has happened to it over the years. This is the joy of owning antiques and getting on top of the issues and bringing them back to life. Those that are not up to this kind of work need to go buy a new bike and ride the wheels off of it.
But when you get to Tim Horton's with your new ride nobody will give a rats rear. Show up with a 30 year old bike and you'll have to beg the onlookers for 2 minutes to go for that pee you needed an hour before. Everytime I rode in to Timmy's with my 750 triple Kaw, I couldn't get away for all of the old guys coming out of Timmy's coffee in hand to see the triple and smell the Klotz.
Hang in there Pete, the smile's coming
