it has been done before. My bike had one that was drilled and converted to manual style before I moved to the zx style one.
With the right tools it should be simple to drill and tap your own tensioner with a manual setup. Otherwise a zx style one can be less of a hassle overall and cheaper if you find a used one. Got mine for less than 20 bucks on ebay.
Just make sure to clip the spring 10mm before install .

My standard one has been modified, it now has a bolt in the end with a lock nut. works fine.

Hi, Mike, I did the zx mod that was recommended on the old KZ 1300 site. There was nothing mentioned about clipping the spring. I have yet to get it going after stalling out on my project over 10 yrs ago. I'm back on it again and hope to get it going soon. What is the reason for cutting the spring? Thanks, Jake

The spring is too stiff for the nylon gears that the chain roll on. Shortens lifespan of those parts considerably.
