I think the answer is in knowing that it will happen and install allowing for the expansion to happen without restraining the metal so that it has to buckle. The obvious buckling got worse when the upper windows were installed locking down the sheet metal around the openings. The other issue that didn't help is that lumber here in Canada is nominal, meaning a 2" x 8" can be anywhere from 1-1/2" x 7-1/4" to anything up to a 2" x 8", so sheet metal bending to wrap the lumber is not easy when every piece of wood is a different size. I had access to a 12 ft sheet metal brake that was 40 miles from the house so I measured the beams and went to the shop with the brake and made pieces. Had I had access to the brake on site, I could have done each piece individually and been more precise. so bottom line (or hind sight) I could have done better had I had the tooling on site. The challenges of DIY projects.

You know when your gut tells you that shit is about to happen and you say, I'll just have to take the chance and pray that it was a false sense, that shit will happen and you'll be doing it all over again. With that said, I'll be changing the cladding on the upper section to aluminum siding which will have mounting that will accommodate the linear expansion and of course it will cost more money.  !@#$@!#@!#$
Finished all the caulking today and the carpet will go in tomorrow. Yippee !! Just have to wait for the replacement window frame.

It got to a high of 47F  with a 30 mph wind out of the west today and with the 3 season room facing south, the room without the heat on was 63 F

All I can say is the 3 season room is done for now. I still have to replace one of the 12 windows because a frame got damaged during shipping from the manufacturer in South Carolina. The wife is happy and that's all I need to hear, so now I can move on to working on the bike again. THANK YOU GOD !!

 
Carpet is in and the firepit is functioning. Nice to fir it up and 5 minutes later all is toasty.

 




Pat saw this metal art in the Muskoka's and said she just had to have it for the sunroom. The price, ....$1100. I said "Really" I could make that for under $100. She doubted me which of course Goaded me, so I bought a 4 x 8 sheet of carbon steel 14 gauge , took a picture of the "Whispering Pines" and made one for her.

 

I like it very much. A great achievement, including the sculpture.   14g steel - what did you use to cut the shapes?

At the time I did the metal art, I was not set up with any cutting tools so this one got done with a jig saw.

The red sign is the refrain between verse 2 & 3 of the song " Bobcaygeon, by the Tragically Hip " , a local band.  I lived in Bobcaygeon for 4 years just before moving to my current house in Port Perry Ontario Canada
