It's possible that if the push rod was removed previously, this ball has rolled out and is hiding somewhere on your floor !
I confirm! Happened to me, more than once.

ok....new cable in hand and back in business.....
kawboy, i get what you mean about doing it all "backwards"....it makes sense.
your quote below :
"My preference for adjusting is to start by screwing in the clutch cables adjusters so that you can't mistake the feel when adjusting the actuator."
i guess you mean adjust both at the hand and at the bottom case....??
at this very point when im adjusting the cable...am i trying to make the cable as short or as long as possible....???

Just have the cable loose so it doesn't affect the feel when adjusting the actuator. As you adjust in the actuator screw, you should be able to feel the ball race engage with the ball pockets to the point that the actuator level doesn't move when you try to rotate clockwise or counterclockwise. This should be achieved with a light feel on the adjuster screw. Then back off the adjuster screw 1/4 turn and lock it up. Then adjust your cables and remove the slack. Leave the top adjuster in the middle of the adjustment so you can adjust if you need to on the road without tools. (not likely required but...)
