How does a printed part compare strength-wise to the originals?

From other projects I've done using our printed parts I can only say it depends on how dense the print is, and about 10,000 other variables, I don't understand. We did a partial print today, it seemed plenty strong but the finish left much to be desired. I'm thinking a filament printer might be better suited to Pete's tool tray Idea than the sloping curves of a side cover. I'm on the hunt for a STL epoxy printer that's big enough for the 1300 side covers.

Here's my first prototype. It's printed in PLA which makes it unsuitable except to confirm that it fits the bike well. The real trays will be printed in carbon fiber reinforced nylon, and they will be black.
