I've done this before. Sandblast off the switches and repaint them with your preference in black. then get a fine tipped brush (like an artists brush) and "fill in the indented letters with touch up paint. Let it dry and you'll find that the letter paint will have shrank, so fill in again. And you're done.

Ah, 'tis the joy of the KZ1300. Those letters? Not engraved.

That's part of why they wear off so easy. They're just painted on the surface. If I REALLY remember, there's some tiny VERY faint grooves where the letters are, but I'm not 100% positive. Definitely not as easy as any other motorcycle controls I've seen.

You may be able to get transfers made with a clear background. Check out the aircraft refitters, they do restoration on gauges etc for small aircraft.
