Since there's no "I'm A Dumb-Ass" category on this forum, I'll describe my recent experience to you here . . .

I was using an angle grinder to cut aftermarket mufflers off of my B2 when I hear a loud "pow!" My initial reaction was that a tire had blown -- it was that loud and that close. But then I realized that tires don't blow when your bike in on the center stand. Next I wondered "Did the angle grinder sparks ignite unburnt exhaust gases in the headers/collector?" I quickly ruled that out as unlikely, too.

Then I saw the battery vent tube hanging inches from where I was grinding. I lifted the seat and found the filler plugs blown out of the battery! I guess it could have been worse and broken the battery case . . .

I knew on some level that battery gases were explosive -- you see those warning stickers often. But I'd never had a personal experience with them. I guess a spark actually travelled into -- or up -- that tiny plastic tube.

Like me with the air box fire count your lucky stars it don't go any where. Sure your going to have to replace the battery and I have to clean carbs and set it all back up. But at leased we still have our bikes in one peace.
