Hi all,

I'm from Dorchester, England. Now in my 60's but have been riding since I was 16. I have several bikes. My main is a Kawasaki ZZR1400 (ZX14) but I also have a 1994 Yamaha XJ900F, a 1975 Norton Commando Mk 111 and of course an A3 Z1300 which is currently undergoing a full restoration. I am scratching my chin about removing the engine as I write. I suppose I will need a hoist as it looks damn heavy? :S

loads of good advice on here.
i took the head and sump off of mine before removing it from the frame to make it easier,
yes it is bloody heavy.
it will come out in one piece but its tight, not much room for fingers

Welcome to the club !

If you have an A3 then it is pretty much the rarest 1300 (very few made).

It was the first model made in the USA in 1981.

Hi Pete,

Well it's got an A3 engine but the frame isn't. Shame but I reckon it's still worth a rebuild. I didn't pay much for it and it got me the 2 miles home before I started to strip it down

Hello from the West Coast of the States Mike:

In the past, I have seen some who strip their bikes down and leave the engine in the frame as the last item.

They then turn the frame and engine over on its side, remove the engine mounting bolts and lift the frame off the engine.
