Hello All:

I read the FAQ (Engine) section and didn't see an answer to this question, so forgive me if it's already been addressed.

1: Will a ZN1300 engine fit directly into a KZ1300 A-4 (82) model frame, with no modifications? Was curious if the engine mounting points on either bike are the same.

2: If the engine is a direct fit replacement, I then start wondering about the propeller shaft length?

The reason for this potential swap, if possible is wanting to go with the legacy FI system. I think the hardest part to this modification is the reluctor wheel for a crank reference. I have read up on the Mega-Squirt projects and the FI swap articles to retain the basic KZ engine as well.

I have located a low mile 84 ZN that is very clean so this bike may serve as a good donor, if I can verify the questions above. This would give me all of the components in question, minus the fuel return fitting to my O.E. KZ fuel tank.

Thanks in advance.

There is a short section in the FAQ's about this swap, and it seems as though the engine does fit to the mounts ok. You will of course have the differences to sort out for wiring, mounting of the associated injection electronics, airbox etc.. Perhaps somebody else will chime in, who could add their experiences.

Thinking about it. Went over last night to try to start it a 2nd time and was not successful. 1st time it fired up with a flat battery after a jump start using a small battery pack, so that was encouraging.

After thinking about the airbox, I see the throttle bodies have a shorter (front to back) profile. 2.5" vs 4.5".

In wanting to keep the stock KZ airbox in place, I will need to research how they changed the European Z13 airbox vrs the KZ style.

Or, if anyone has a euro spec one hanging around????

Regards.

Todd.

Dave Ewing on the old KZ1300.com did this conversion. You might be able to look at that. Did you get one of his dvd's?

Agreed.

i do recall David's article and read it a few years ago, will need to read it again. I recall something about needing to modify the fuel rail to clear one of the frame tubes.

Regards.
