No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configuration:blink: Greetings Kawasaki Fans,
I picked up a badly weathered, fully loaded 1985 Voyager for a couple of hundred bucks a few months ago. The resurrection project has been going slowly but steadily as funds and hard to find parts become available.
After freeing up a locked up motor and going through the fuel system, I got her to start and run pretty good. Then, rather suddenly, it stopped firing on two cylinders. A little troubleshooting revealed that one of the pick-u coils had failed. I looked for a replacement, and found they were actually more than I paid for the bike, if you could find a new one. Even used ones were pricey, and there's no guarantee how long they would last. Then I hit upon a more cash friendly resolution I wanted to share with this community.
It turns out the same pick-up coil is used in a early 80's Suzuki SP500. If you can solder wires, this coil is identical, and easily mounted to the KZ1300 pick-up coil plate. Rather than replace the plate with all three coils (and having to remove the alternator rotor to do so), the coil can be replaced with the plate still on the bike....at least the one that I replaced (#3 & #4 cylinders). Just be sure you clean the wires good after stripping, because oil will have penetrated the insulation, making soldering a bit of a challenge. Also be sure to use heat shrink to protect the solder joints properly upon completion.
I paid about $30 for this coil on eBay, as opposed to a minimum of $150 for a KZ1300 coil set. Check it out:
I hope this helps some of you out when dealing with this problem.
Mike

Hi Mike,
I don't know why that link won't display correctly. This works however:

SP 500 pickup on E-Bay

Bill

PS: Welcome to KZ1300.com! I'll see that your tip about the alternate pickup coil gets into the FAQ.

Thanks

Hi Bill,
I've almost got her done, but still have a few issues. I had to replace the fairing, it was rather badly broken up. I found a pretty nice one for under a hundred bucks, and transferred all the components and harnesses.
 What a friggin nightmare! I used to be a professional auto mechanic, and replaced wire harnesses in many automobile dashboards. They were nothing compared to this!
Now, everything works but the audio system. No displays, no sound....nothing. Anything come to mind off the top of your head?
I'll be browsing the Clarion troubleshooting manual you guys were kind enough to share. Thanks very much for posting it on this site.
:woohoo: I really can't wait to actually ride this bike. I get my plates next week, so she'll be legal (after multiple trips to the DMV and the highway patrol).
Regards, ride safe,
Mike
