Howdy Z1300 mates!
I am from Norway and my ride is a black '85 Z1300 DFI with 67.100km on the odo. I was just surfing on the internet and came across this site, and to my great & pleasant surprise I see the long gone KZ1300.com is taken well care of here. It’s really great that David’s valuable technical info is brought along!
My first Z1300 was a '79 which I had from 1980 to 1986 and I put on approx 60.000km over those years. I was yong in 1980 and extremely enthusiastic about the Z1300, so I managed 22.000km the first season + 3.000km on the bike I traded for the Z1300. Taken into consideration that the MC season in mid Norway is 6 months, I more or less lived upon the bike. I was so encouraged about owning the mighty "King Of The Road" and I would say the Z1300 became the final climax for the normal "upright sitting" bikes. Already early '80s start categorizing the motorbikes like – touring, sport, soft choppers... so the regular bikes fell through and peps lost interest in them. Nowadays we see an increasing interest in retro bikes, and I notice the Z1300 is either hated or loved among the MC riders. However, they're never forgotten - all bike riders remember this huge in-line 6 powered bike.
I had some kind of a "mental break" from bike riding for two decades, but when I revert again it was no doubt about what I should have. I acquired the DFI back in 2008 and I am the second Norwegian owner after the import from Germany in 2006. The cosmetics is not mint, and I think it’s been through a 5th rod breakdown at some point due to a small crack in the block caused from inside the crankcase. Besides that it’s technically fully up running, everything works fine and it runs very well. I was surfing a lot on the internet to check out for spares, and came across a customized Z1300 displayed on Dreads bikers site in UK. It was the Fat Ass in South Africa, and I guess most owners have seen it, it has also been displayed on The Kneeslider BTW. I contaced the owner, and after some back & forth and a lot of Emails, I was deep into a rear wheel widening project.
This is a demanding build, but for me is that one of the joyful thinghs with it. An other good thing is the nice people I meet world wide during parts research and solving technical challenges. I am a member of the Norwegian Z1300 club and you can see the project start in the link below. Due to hectic activity on many other things in life has the project been on hold for quite some time, so that project file is not fully updated.
