Hallo

I have a 1979 Z1300 with original carbs . I had the carbs serviced with 3 new carb kits from japan , bike starts easily and runs fine , it has a snag though , if ridden hard for plus minus 30km the bike stars to starve from fuel . I have checked the vacuum in the tank and it is not a problem , A mechanic friend of mine proposed i add a low pressure fuel pump to the bike , he proposed a Yamaha FJ 1200 pump . Has anyone done this before and if so what is the outcome? Can the gravity fed carbs handle a fuel pump of say 2-4 psi?These pumps are rediciously expensive . Im willing to go there but Im afraid of damaging the system . I have a petcock on the tank as well as a electric fuel shuttoff valve , both allowing enough fuel to the carbs . What else should i try.

In my opinion the electric solenoid is the problem, mostly because it causes the fuel routing to be too circuitous. Here's a good discussion of the topic:

Hello Eddie,

I had the same problem. Forget the low pressure pump.

I fitted a Pingel Power-flo petcock and adaptor and took out the fuel solenoid valve. Hosed up with 8mm fuel hose straight from petcock through a high flow filter to carbs and all good.
Make sure you do switch off the petcock when parked as you will not have the back up of the solenoid valve anymore!

The Pingel parts are:
Pingel Power-flo 6211 3/8 NPT Inward facing Petcock
Pingel A1702 adaptor

Easily obtained on Ebay etc in aluminium or chrome etc.

You will have to file your tank slightly to allow the petcock to fit. This is not a major task and is very easily carried out.

Easy stuff, first and foremost- make sure the vent hole on the tank lid is clear. Any kind of pump and/or line routing won't mean anything if your vent is plugged.

Looked into this before as well. Even found a nice Holley fuel pressure regulator that adjusts down to 1 PSI to hopefully prevent too much pressure from going to the carb floats. Main reason was I wanted to install beefier fuel filters and was already having fuel starvation issues.

In the end you're just adding additional complications to a system that works fine as is once you've set it up properly like others have suggested :).
