My bike is a KZ 1300 1982-A4. I have looked through all the articles under Suspension and Chassis but have been unable to find the following.

On removal of my front fork springs one came out with the tight coil end facing to the bottom and the other the other way around.
Could anyone advise which way the tight coil end should be facing please?

One side had correct 350 ml ( very cruddy !) oil and the other no oil at all. I am replacing all the "O" rings , two seals and cleaning the barrels before reassembly.

There doesn't seem to be any hard and fast rules concerning which way the fork springs are put into forks. I would be just consistent on both sides. This screen shot from the manual appears to have the tighter wind at the top.
There is a service limit on the spring. If it is shorter than 580 mm, they should be replaced.

And of course , replacing the oi is also a good idea. Most motorcycles never have this done.

Thanks tackelhappy, springs are well within the service limit.(590mm) and have checked their tension on the floor by leanong on them and they seem about even. When they say "oils ain't oils" I think they must mean the oil out of one of the forks was terrible and most likely never changed in the last 20 years and the amount of rubbish that came out could have grown a crop of spuds.

If the goal is to minimize 'un-sprung weight', then it would make sense that the tighter coils should be at the top. I've always done it that way but is seems to me that Progressive brand springs suggests it doesn't matter.
