Is there a comparison cross reference chart of 1979 - 82 engine or so, transmission parts?
Just exercising an idea of collecting parts and putting a full engine together. Possibly 'upgraded', let's say starting on an older crank case with parts from a newer year.
I have already a full top end organized (just not fully serviced yet).

Has the transmission changed from 79 over the years?

Stan my first thought, although a bit labourious, was to use a parts look-up tool like Partzilla?

You could minimise the effort by choosing key parts to x-refer, ones that fit the crankcases such as bearings (input / output shafts, layshafts, clutch shaft etc.) and then one or two 'significant internals like major gears?

That was you should cover all the critical dimensions and dynamic parameters, or at least a high level of confidence?

Re manufacturer part numbers, I use the supplier sites like cmsnl.com to look-up initially.

I looked at the parts catalog trying to compare, and it is a big job indeed. And there are no details, like measurements, and that's crucial.
Best would be hands on sorting things. I know there is no problem with top end, using older cylinder block on let's say 82 model like mine. I know it's perhaps best to work with a complete engine to start with, but looking at the old parts for sale, there are many engine parts available for quite cheap, it's tempting to one day put together an engine from all the different parts.

Partzilla does the comparing for you, by listing all models a given part number fits, e.g. A1/A2/A3 so I was thinking that would save you time.
