I have a small drip of oil in the outlet from the water pump, does this indicate a fail on the mechanical seal and I need to strip and renew all gaskets/seals. I had noticed this but thought head gasket was the cause of coolant in the oil and vice versa . Kwack 1261 pointed it out last week when he dropped in to pick some crash bars off me so its now on my mind before I start putting the thing back together.

move the circlip up the bypass tube, this will let the bypass tube drop into the bottom impeller cover. be gentle with a pair of grips.
if it wont move you will have to undo the bolts on the stat housing as well as the impeller cover and try and remove the whole lot.
try not to break any of it.
if nothing moves then cut the bypass tube in half as you can buy a new one from Oz at Zed parts.
once you have the impeller cover off remove the circlip from the front of the impeller and carefully remove it.
there is an O ring on the shaft so it will be a bugger to get off. i made two wire loops from thin mig wire to use as a puller.
once the impeller is off you should be able to see where the oil is coming from.
as i pointed out there should be a small drain hole behind the water pump seal chances are its blocked letting the oil pass the water seal
see how you get on and report back or if you get stuck give me a call

I made a simple puller to take the impeller off. If you have oil leaking then its not the mechanical seal that's leaking, its the oil seal behind it. Im not sure if that can be replaced without removing the water pump shaft...

You can, I replaced mine with the shaft in place. You do, however, need to be careful not to rip the seal as you manoeuvre it down the shaft to be seated in it's recess.
