That's what I was sorta thinking rust like water. There is some crap still in reserve tank. I just wanted some opinions on it. This is my first bike rebuild. I'll have get better dang pic up tomorrow.

Would your dad have tried to have put any "leak stop" type additive (Bars Leaks, Radweld, etc.) in the expansion tank?

I'll have ask my dad. Thanks, never thought of that. Here's another pic. Hope it's better.

As for the impeller not turning. I've had two fail. The steel key part of the shaft rusts so that less and less key protrudes from the shaft. The shaft then starts to round the keyway cast into the back of the impeller.

I bought a very expensive CNC impeller from the German shop and then built up the shaft keys with weld and then had them turned back into shape.

Here was me thinking you where making coffee. Had the same problem when purchased a Z1300 in the UK from a guy who never laid a spanner on the bike since it left the factory back in the 80's. Oil was sludge, coolant like Cadburys chocolate and had to do a full flush. Forward and reverse. Take the rad off and flush out, remove thermostat and flush out with a hose pipe. Surprising how much shite gets flushed out. When you refit and fill the system up with fresh fluid as per manual. Remember you have to bleed the system as per the manual. Hope you have a manual.

If there's coolant leaking from the front of the engine it may well be the waterpump mechanical seal gone. Run it up to operating temperature & see if water comes out below the water pump housing near the cylinder base gasket. If it does, the mechanical seal is shot. It's still available & not too difficult a job.
