I just got my cams installed and my valves shimmed after a top end job. I installed a ZRX tensioner with 10MM cut off the spring. I set the cams per the factory manual then installed the tensioner and rotated the engine several times to confirm. Then I shimmed my valves, and that's all good to go.

My question is after all this I installed the valve cover, and I'm curious if I have to reset my cam chain tension. I know on other KZ's with Hy-Vo chains you have to set the tensioner with the valve cover installed otherwise you will do a lot of damage. Does the valve cover press on the chain on the 1300's or am I good to go?

Thanks

I would be very surprised if it did. True, there is a plastic runner on the inside of the valve cover, but I think that's just so it doesn't wear metal to metal.

That being said, it can't hurt to set it again. From what I gather, it's not a very involved process.

You are good to go. I used a manual tensioner on mine and being unsure of when tight was tight I removed the cam cover to be sure. Once I got to the adjustment I wanted I reinstalled the cover and rechecked the adjustment bolt. It had the same feel to it so the chain had not tightened with the installation of the cam cover.

I'm involved in a discussion over at KZrider wherein I maintain that if you must leave the cam cover on to adjust the cam chain the manual would say so. Here's a link:

How many of you folks have adjusted your cam chain with the cam cover off? I've done in on several of my bikes with no ill results so far.

sorry for stating the obvious, i would have said its normal running state is with the cam cover on, therefore the cam chain should be adjusted accordingly as it would do with the auto adjuster.

Seems there are differing opinions, and for some models this is a very serious issue. I guess my stator will come off again and I will reset just to be sure. But in general I am still curious about this issue.
