Guys, I know its been covered before, but I'm about to fit a new Cam Chain Tensioner to my 13: the recommended ZX11 / ZZR unit: 12048-1113.
I thought I had read on a previous post that I need to cut 10mm of the spring, as its too robust for the job.
Can someone who has done the mod, confirm if this is correct ?

I did this mod and ran the engine with a regular length spring without problems.

However, when I rebuilt the engine I shortened the spring 10mm as I thought it was too strong and now I worry it's not strong enough!

I know my above comments do not help you but I've never seen anybody recommend leaving it at the original length.

I have 10,000km's on my rebuilt engine with the 10 mm cut off the spring and no problems. The suggestion was that the high tension rate of the spring was too much for the plastic idler wheel.
If you want to keep the original spring tension, then you could buy the stronger idler from Liska racing in the USA- but it is nearly double the price.

I fitted mine 8000 miles ago, but did cut off the recommended 10mm from the spring. Have had no problems.

I had understood that the 10mm needs to be cut off the spring because it coil binds and overloads the tensioner wheel. Cutting a coil spring back so there are less turns actually makes for a stronger spring.
