I had to buy some new ones as mine were well beyond it, so I bought the ones from Germany.

However.... try as I might, I cannot get the air box back onto the carbs... ! They keep slipping off and I have to apply so much pressure to get all three rubbers to slip onto the carbs its unreal, and beyond my strength!

I have tried everything, oil, grease, vaseline, dry with spit, the pressure I have to apply across the three rubbers to get them to slip on is just too much.

I have also tried rubbers on carbs and pushing the air box on, and the other way round; rubbers on air box and pushing that onto the carbs - even two on the one side and one on the other.

No dice - wasted Sunday.

Before I take the carbs off the bike and try it on the bench, is there a 'smart' way to do this that I obviously am not smart enough to think of?

Hi Paul,
The best I could do with with my hands was pop one side of the air box on and then the other, making no headway. Finally I used some tapered plastic shims to keep the side I'd pushed onto the carb, in place, while I worked the other side with a pry bar and some more shims. It wasn't elegant but I eventually got it all the way onto the carbs.

Thanks Bill.

I can't think of how the factory did this....

I think I shall enlist the help of a friend and indeed use some guides/shims and maybe even take the carbs off and do it on the bench... wrap some strap around it to tighten and keep in place whilst I tighten the jubilee rings around the rubber to fasten them properly.

I can't think of how the factory did this....

On page 274  (of my Manual) you'll see "Tool # 38".  I can only imagine the $$ of this - if even available.   As I just suggested in an other post - Loosening the Carb bolts, fitting the top air box to the carbs ( with some Silicone grease) and then tightening those bolts -will solve the dilemma.
