Find it difficult at times to determine the level of the electrolyte. By placing the light behind the battery, no doubts.

Thanks for the chuckle stocktoy.. Yes that's a braided cover for the vent hose. And now back to our regular scheduled programing.

Just for shits and giggles Scotch, try your light down near the bottom of the battery and see if you can see the spongy lead that fell off the Negative plates (I believe). When they manufacture batteries they build the case tall enough to accept a certain amount of the spongy lead so when it falls of (and it will eventually) it has a place to stay out of harms way.. Normally the battery casings are black and you can't see through them. You might be able to see this effect with the white opaque case.
The primary cause for battery failure is a dead short in a cell. This happens when that spongy lead builds up in the bottom of the case and bridges between one of the positive and one of the negative plates.
(Just some of that fun B.S. I learned in Auto Technician trade school 40 years ago (showing my age now)
