Ok, I got the beast insured and took it out today. Its open pipes are VERY loud (I'll have to address that - maybe put some baffles in), but it goes like stink..... once over the initial hesitancy it has when departing from idle.

It idles nicely, but then when I open up the throttle slowly to start riding, it feels like it is running on a few cylinders less than the full six, until it gets up and running and then it goes well. And if I don't play the clutch gingerly when starting to roll, it will stall...

As a comparison: my KZ1000P in neutral I can throttle up fast and it just goes from idle to 6000rpm without a hiccup. The KZ1300 in neutral if I try to throttle up too quickly, it hiccups and either stalls or then revs up.

Any ideas on how to improve this?

I am running a standard set up in terms of needle sizes and the carbs have been properly balanced and mixtures set using Colortune. Only difference with standard is that I have four air pods instead of the standard air filter and air box. Spark plugs are the right colour after a 20 mile run.

Cheers
Paul

Just reading up on the effect that exhaust baffles have... running open pipes apparently decreases back pressure and that can be bad for the engine (running lean and hot) and also cause low end power loss...??

As I do need to put some silencing in, I may just do that first and see if that has an effect on low end performance...

Please correct me if I am wrong..

some may not agree with me and that's fine
but from my experience it is not a big deal
if you want to add silencers due to noise its OK
many bikes today running aftermarket open pipes
our riding style is for most part cruising mid range
so, me personally, don't see an issue with leave it as it is and adjust the mixtures a bit
if you are going to make changes on the pipes anyway, then wait till you done

hope that help

Paul,

I have ran a Z1300 with similar filters to you (3) and straight thru pipes and it was ok on all standard carb settings (see pic of bike below) so I think its maybe a set-up issue you need to play around with.
If it runs ok on main jet (above 1800 rpm ish') but not below that, then it is a primary carb setting issue.
The earlier suggestion to set your 6 mixtures a further 1/2 turn OUT maybe a good starting point...............

I have ordered six exhaust baffles and will drop those in first, and if not OK, will try the mixture screws.

Thank you!
