I have started trying to get my "new" black KZ1300-A3 roadworthy. I got it a couple months ago from the original owner, who put about 23k miles on the clock. He had parked it in his garage, with the intention of replacing the cam chain tensioner and rebuilding the front master cylinder sometime in the next year...but he had other motorcycles to ride, so the KZ ended up sitting for about 25 years. Realizing that he still had other motorcycles (that were arguably nicer/newer) to ride, he decided to try and sell it to someone who would appreciate it and I was lucky enough to purchase it from him.
Fortunately for me, before he stored it, he changed the oil and filter, drained the carbs (and subsequently lost the screws), coated the inside of the gas tank with oil and removed the battery. He had also purchased a new cam chain tensioner, which he included with the sale.
It has minimal rust, but all of the covers have lost their chrome. The paint is ok but the pinstripes are a little faded. The tires have good tread and there does not appear to be any dry rot or cracking, but I'll probably replace them anyway. He bought it with the dealer installed fairing but they did not remove the original headlight, like what I've seen on others. I will probably remove it though, and replace it with a Maier GP Sport fairing.
Anyway, I'm very excited to get it back on the road and, so far, I have replaced cam chain tensioner, changed the oil and filter, installed new drain screws, installed a new AGM battery and cleaned and oiled the air filter (I think it's a K&M filter). I started bleeding the front brakes and although I could get pressure, it was not what it should be, so I ordered a master cylinder rebuild kit, that should arrive today.
I also bought a black Bell Bullitt helmet that I plan to pinstripe so it matches the bike.... so I'm ready to test drive it this weekend, hopefully.
