it would be an interesting mod, but I would be concerned with the stress on the engine casing. Not sure if the casing has enough meat to take a lot of lateral load on the left side. Just don't know.
If you want to get larger wheels on the rear to go for a 180 wide tire, have a read through Robert Bolduc's build. It's drop dead gorgeous and the work he's put into to it is remarkable.

Can't find the thread right now but somewhere on the internets I had read about this conversion. I believe you basically keep part of the drive shaft and have bevel gears route the power to the left side where the chain is attached. With this in mind I think some of the stress should be absorbed into the frame if that's where this extra machinery is being placed. Aside from the extra complication, it could be up in the air whether or not this causes more or less stress than the conventional drive shaft on it's own.
