AW82-TR1 mod for the ZN1300

AW82-TR1 coils
As a general note- AW82 coils can be found in many places including EBay, Amazon to name a few but you need to be very diligent on the source since the market has been flooded with aftermarket products claiming to be AW82 coils that meet the original spec. MANY DO NOT!! If you find original AW82-TR1 Coils that are stamped with that info, they are likely original Honda coils and should resistance check on the primary winding at 2.4Ω This is not to say the others can’t be used but we must respect the primary resistance minimum of 1.8 Ω for the ZN1300 coils, as listed in the Factory Service Manual page 5-11.

First, I’d like to give Strate6 (Pete) a shout out for forging ahead 12 years ago and doing this mod on a KZ1300 and creating a Directive on how to do the mod found here www.kz1300.com/forum/electrical-ignition...z1300-how-to?start=0   This is the foundation for this instruction with some clean up and newer relevant information.

The AW82-TR1 coils are physically the same size and will bolt in place with no mods to the mount and no changes to the wiring. In the engineering world we look at Fit, Form, and Function to determine interchangeable parts from different manufacturers. The AW82-TR1 coils meet the standard and should be a straight swap out.

Equipment list to carry out this upgrade.
3  Good AW82-TR1 Coils with primary resistance greater than 1.8 Ω
6 Feet of good quality copper core 7mm wide HT (high tension) Lead wire. (optional)

Steps to perform
1.     Remove the old coils from the bike and transfer the mounting bolts to the new coils.
2.     Either remove the secondary spark plug wires from the old coils and trim ½” (13mm) off the end of the wire and install into the new coils, or cut and install new 7mm HT solid core spark plug wires in to the coils and cut to length and install the spark plug caps.
3.     Mount the coils in to their respective locations and wire up the primary wiring.
Note- install the red wires spade connectors to the terminals marked + positive on each of the coils.
Connect the black wire to the - negative terminal on the 1-6 coil.
Connect the green wire to the - negative terminal of the 2-5 coil.
Connect the blue wire to the - negative terminal of the 3-4 coil.
