Do you really need new bearings shells, if the old ones are still within tolerance and in good condition you are better off staying with them.

Not sure of their exact status Rick. I'll be visiting my mechanic in a few hours to see what is up. He and I discussed it before and thought since we've gone this far we might as well replace them all if available. We are doing all the seals/ gaskets and any other parts we can get hold of.

So the mechanic says one of the journals is pitted. He thinks it may have gotten some antifreeze in the oil at some point. He feels all the mains should be replaced and the journals polished. The chains have too much slack.

The good news is the transmission is in great shape.

He discovered some damage on the engine casing. Something ended up where it shouldn't have and ground the case up but it didn't break through.
