I've sprayed a coat of high temp paint on the engine while I had parts stripped off, I'm thinking it won't be very hard wearing and would last longer with a coat of engine laquer over the top, does this seem like a good idea

I don't know of a clear coat that will take temperature, I'm sure they are out there but its probably a specialty product.
The enamel paint will harded significantly when you heat up the engine. Rock chips are going to happen, don't worry too much about that stuff.

I put a coat of lacquer on, found some the same make as the paint, time will tell how it lasts but it looks nicer with a bit of a shine and should deter petrol and oil a bit from staining.

Painted the wheels satin black while I was at it, bit of a meaner look I think. I had to sand what I could down of the peeled chrome on the engine covers to get them flat-ish, best I could do for now without time and money.
