A lot of people, including some bike mechanics don't know what a properly running 6 cylinder sounds or feels like.
I wish you luck finding that rubber. I have no secrets to reveal except you may have gotten lucky and it could be down somewhere around the oil pan. I'd start by removing it, raise the bike a bit so you can get under it with a light and see if its jammed up somewhere in the cam or water pump chain.
