The Impact of Cutting Springs on StiffnessCutting a spring indeed has an impact on its stiffness. When a spring is cut, its overall length is reduced, causing a change in its spring rate. As the length decreases, the spring rate increases , making the spring stiffer. The stiffness of a spring is directly related to its dimensions, particularly its length. By altering the length of a spring, we can effectively modify its stiffness. Cutting a spring and reducing its length effectively decreases the number of coils, resulting in a higher spring rate. This means that the spring will require more force to compress or extend, making it stiffer compared to its original state.
This EXACTLY what you DO NOT want to do ! But: To each their own - They are your gears and rollers !

Interesting. So folks that have reduced spring length on ZX10 tensioners have actually increased the force going into the chain, roller, slides. Good catch Sir Scotch..

I think there's some confusion about the terms shortening and compressing.
If we compress, the tension increases; if we shorten the spring by removing the coils, the tension remains the same.
If we compress, the tension increases; if we shorten the spring by removing the coils, the tension remains the same.

As one of those who shortened their ZX tensioner spring, my rationale was that:
Hope this helps!
- Yes, I was marginally increasing the spring rate
- However, I significantly reduced the spring pre-tension
Hope this helps!
