Primary Chain Timing

Hi there,

Silly question time:

Can someone explain the reasoning for aligning the secondary shaft with the crankshaft, please? It's when you rotate the crankshaft so the dot on the DRIVE sprocket (crankshaft) is at its highest and then count 7 primary chain links and align the dot on the DRIVEN sprocket (secondary shaft) to that 7th link on the primary chain. The secondary shaft has drive sprockets for the cam chain and timing chain and then the oil pump drive gear. Obviously the timing between the crankshaft and the cam shafts and the ignition timing are critical but the secondary shaft 'appears' to be just an intermediary so the importance of aligning it to the crankshaft evades me.

Thanks in advance,

Andy

Good morning.
The synchronization of the two axles is due to a question of engine balance and vibrations.

I had a hard time finding the marks on the crankshaft.

I didn't do this and I've not had problems with mine. I may just have been lucky though

Good morning,

Thanks for the explanation. I thought it might be something like that or collision of parts (I haven't rotated the secondary shaft in situ to find out but I'm thinking more when it's spinning at high speed and the spring compresses?).

Where did you find that information or are you a seasoned professional with engines?

Kind regards,

Andy

A year and a half ago, a bastard left me with a stiff ass and an empty wallet by selling me a 1.3 A1 whose only problem, in theory, was that it had been sitting idle for a few months.

Well, I had to rebuild the engine and electronic ignition system almost completely.

Thanks to this blessed forum and the help of invaluable collaborators like Kawboy I have recovered (almost completely) the motorcycle.

Responding to messages like yours is for me to correspond to what I have received from this forum.

Josep.
