I wonder if there is a way to rotate the crank in a similar way through the casing above the starter gear? Would also mean that the engine could only be turned in the correct direction if at any point in the future some muppet decided to tinker.

The "muppet" would be turning something on the starter-end forever with no results' because it's only centrifugal force that engages the starter-clutch mechanism.
