Am I correct in assuming that the coils are designed so the wire leads coming from them cannot be replaced? (I hope not...)

I have a few wire that snapped due to brittleness.

Any suggestions on how (best, easy and cheap) I can replace them to see if this 1980 is wanting to turn over and fire up?

I am new to the kz1300 but from what i have been reading you are correct. They don`t come out. I think the cheapest best fix is buying aw82 coils. Like I said I am new to the 13 but i do read more than i talk. Best regards Pete the 3rd

Pete,

When you say "Wires" I am assuming you mean the HT leads & not the low voltage colored wires GREEN/BLUE/BLACK ?

If you mean the HT leads, you could use one of these on EBAY (Item Number 160403214261)

Its not the best way to repair but you dont have much choice if you have the early coils fitted.

What Pete (3rd) says earlier is spot on.
You are far better off throwing the early coils away & replacing with the far better AW82 type coils. This also means disposing of your BALLAST RESISTOR & a few basic wiring mods, but well wort it as the AW82 has replaceable HT Leads & gives a far better quality spark.
I did a full written TEC Page on how to do this conversion for the UK Owners Club but due to a certain very childish individual on that site, it was removed (they know who they are!)
I am however sure it is in the FAQ section on this site.
If not let me know & I maybe able to send you it.

(Had to google HT Leads ;) )

I have a write up on the AW82 Coil Conversion, and will likely follow that route.

By far the best place is Ebay or Gumtree.

They are not a part made by Kawasaki so were fitted to quite a few early 80's multi cylinder bikes.
The ones I know they were definitly fitted to were the CB900FA & F2 & the Honda CB750KZ & F2 & CB650 nighthawk. There are no doubt many more too.

Have a look at Ebay number 400594405288 as a good example.

The only problem is the bikes they were fitted to were 4 cylinders so you sometimes have to buy 2 pairs to get 3 coils..........but have one spare !
I always ask the Ebay seller to confirm what numbers they have on them before bidding / buying. They MUST be Aw82 to be safe & not burn your CDI unit.

This is one of the best & worthwhile updates you can do to a Z1300......well worth the cost. Done it to every Z1300 I have owned.
