Check the valve clearances before you start to pull it apart to fix it.

If it's not too late, perform a cylinder leak down test on each bore, before you tear it down.
A simple compression test will tell you one thing. if you do the leak down test, it will tell you if it's the rings, valves, or both.
You can pick up a leak down test set relatively cheaply at a local tool supply Co.
If there is more than 30K on the odometer, I would probably do the whole top end. If the rings prove tight and are serviceable, I might do just the cylinder head. That would depend on what the leak down test reveals.

Hi, leak down test done and cylinders 1 and 6 totally out of order. I even poured some liquid over the piston and it went right trough.
