Replacement Ignition? (1979 A1) was created by SteveSmith
Evening all,
I finally had a ride out on my kz1300.
The hydraulic clutch conversion I did has turned out fine (though I’d forgotten just how heavy/clunky changing gear is on old bikes).
Driving in slow traffic it feels like I’m getting stuttering sparks, once I get into flowing traffic it all runs nicely, when the revs drop it stutters.
I suspect ignition rather than fuel.
Given the chance of standard parts being available nowadays, what’s the collective wisdom about which parts to buy?
Dynatech coils? But which ones?
Pickups and CDI replacement?
The dreaded interweb lists XDG 3.32 as a product, from Germany, any thoughts?
thanks all
Steve

I had to think about this one for a few minutes because ignitions usually work and then they don't. So what could cause the ignition to partially fail at low speed?
The only thing that comes to mind is the pulser coil circuit. One has to understand how the pulser coils work on the KZ. They are an induction coil influenced by a permanent magnet. At idle, they produce around 5 volts and I believe above 2000 or 3000 rpms, they produce around 8 volts. Their purpose is to trigger the Darlington transistors in the igniter. The Darlington transistors open and close the primary circuit in the coils Depending upon the voltage produced by the pulser coils, the Darlington transistors remain closed for longer periods of time (dwell) in ignition terms.
I suspect that you may have higher than acceptable resistance in the wiring between the pulser coils and the igniter causing the output voltage from the pulser coils to be low and not firing the Darlington transistors properly.

Thank you, the wires coming out of the cover at the right hand end of the crank (that’s where the coils live I guess?) will be my starting point.
cover me, I’m going in

No, On the 79 A1 the ignition pick-up coils are under here, aren’t they?

Hi HairyLeg,
I've come to believe that using the back button while composing a post causes the software to get confused and results in that permissions message.
Sorry. Go ahead and try again. You have 24 hours to edit your post.
