As most of you know I am putting a 1980 engine in a 79 frame.
The engine that came from Detroit has a tail with 4 wires from the stator. The blue one has a plug but the 3 yellow have been cut off.
The mechanic that removed my engine also cut the 3 wires from the stator and left about 3 inches of lead at the regulator/rectifier. There is a 4th yellow wire spliced into
I'm guessing there was no factory connector for those 2 years. On the 81 there is a connector with the 3 yellow.
Since all 3 yellow wires are the same, how do I find which one goes where?

i dont think it matters thats why they are all the same colour
the forth yellow wire goes off to the fuel solenoid.

The 1979 and 1980 models had a connector on the stator output wires. It was insufficient to carry the current output. The result was that the connections overheated and the plastic connector plug would melt. For this reason, most owners cut off the connectors and soldered the wires together. Your photo shows the heat shrink over the wires that have been soldered together.

To parrot what's already been said:
Stator connections are notoriously tricky. I've cut off several to replace them with either new connectors or to fabricate new connectors entirely. On my '79 I chopped the connectors off (they were showing signs of overheating anyway) and replaced them with Anderson PowerPole connectors, rated for 30A/600V.
In fact, it's costing a few bucks (PowerPole connectors are ~$1/pair) but I'm making an entirely new wiring harness and using these almost exclusively. They're pretty cool, though: They're genderless and modular, and can be configured into various shapes and such.
